319-363-IMAX ext. 27

The Science Station--McLeod/Busse IMAX(R) Dome Theatre will present an undersea adventure this spring as two films splash into the theatre March 1. MacGillivray Freeman's Dolphins and Ghosts of the Abyss, a James Cameron Film about the Titanic, each present unique perspectives on the ocean and what lies beneath. The films will run through June 30. From the dazzling coral reefs of the Bahamas to the wind-swept seas of Patagonia, Dolphins takes audiences under the water's surface for a romp with inquisitive Atlantic spotted dolphins, acrobatic dusky dolphins, and the familiar bottlenose dolphin of Flipper fame. From rarely seen fish-herding behavior to a close-up look at complex communication activities, Dolphins will give audiences a fascinating new perspective on the lives of dolphins and their remarkable intelligence. In Ghosts of the Abyss, Academy Award® winning director and master storyteller James Cameron journeys back to the site of his greatest inspiration - the legendary wreck of the Titanic. With a team of the world's foremost historic and marine experts and friend Bill Paxton, he embarks on an unscripted adventure back to the final grave where nearly 1,500 souls lost their lives almost a century ago. Using state-of-the-art technology developed expressly for this expedition, Cameron and his crew are able to explore virutally all of the wreckage, inside and out, as never before. In this unprecedented motion picture event, made especially for IMAX Theatres, Cameron and his team bring audiences to sights not seen since the sinking 90 years ago and explore why the landmark vessel - more than any shipwreck - continues to intrigue and fascinate the public. This deep-sea adventure is sponsored by Henry Russell Bruce and Seatasea Scuba Diving and Windsurfing. For more information on the films, showtimes, and movie trailers, visit www.sciencestation.org.

Science Station—McLeod/Busse IMAX® Dome Theatre Will Present The Lion King™

Monday, June 09, 2003

363-IMAX ext. 27

CEDAR RAPIDS—The Science Station—McLeod/Busse IMAX® Dome Theatre announced today that it will add Disney’s The Lion King™ to its summer schedule of IMAX® films. The film will run from July 18 to September 18. The Science Station has received over 1,000 requests for the film, which was released for the Giant Screen last December. At the time of its release, the Science Station did not possess the technology to present the film. The current projection system is capable of running only films made for the IMAX® that run 60 minutes or less. A new IMAX® technology, digital re-mastering (DMR), allows theatres to run longer films that have gone through an extensive process to be shown on the IMAX screen. Due to popular demand and the generosity of local donors, the Science Station will upgrade its projection system June 23-25, allowing a greater flexibility in its schedule. The Science Station chose The Lion King as its first DMR film due to its strong connection to the mission of the organization. “Our mission is to inspire and stimulate the imagination through entertaining learning experiences,” stated Joseph Nolte, Executive Director. “Accompanied by a lobby exhibit highlighting the food chain and biomes of the African continent, this film will surely accomplish this mission.” The Lion King will mean added evening hours for the facility, and will join an already-strong summer lineup of films, with Cirque du Soleil: Journey of Man featured July 1-31, and Australia: Land Beyond Time featured August 1-Oct. 31. Tickets will be released to members of the Science Station immediately. The general public may purchase tickets beginning Monday, June 16, 2003. Contact 319-363-IMAX or visit www.sciencestation.org for showtimes and more information.

Science Station to Showcase New Corn Uses, “Corn Detectives” Quiz

JOHNSTON, Iowa – March 19, 2003 – Corn’s many forms and uses will be on display this Saturday, March 22, in a special exhibit at the Cedar Rapids Science Station. The exhibit, provided by the Iowa Corn Promotion Board (ICPB), will offer a hands-on introduction to corn’s role in Americans’ daily lives – from crayons and cereal to blue jeans and motor fuel. A surprising array of corn-based products will be featured, as well as presentations about the newest uses for corn and a quiz for “corn detectives.” Visitors who search out the answers to the corn quiz in the displays will have a chance to win a pair of bed pillows filled with a new corn-based fiber. “We’re very pleased to bring this display to a premier facility like the Cedar Rapids Science Station,” explains Edith Munro, information coordinator for Iowa Corn. “We think visitors will not only have fun but be surprised at the roles corn plays throughout our lives.” Munro noted that the corn-based fill used in the pillows is an example of a whole new family of corn uses with important environmental advantages: “These pillows are made with PLA (polylactic acid), an environmentally friendly product. Ethanol isn’t the only corn product that helps make our world better.” Linn County members of the Iowa Corn Growers Association (ICGA) will staff the exhibit, giving urban families an opportunity to talk with Iowa farmers about what farming involves and how Iowa’s premier field crop is used. Children visiting the exhibit will receive coloring pages on paper made with corn starch and crayons made with soybeans. The Iowa Corn Promotion Board and Iowa Corn Growers Association work jointly to provide information and education about corn and its uses. The ICPB and ICGA share a joint mission of improving the opportunities for Iowa’s corn producers to be profitable.
