Registration Questions
Q. Don’t I need to indicate a shirt size for my child?
A. No. We will be ordering enough of each size t-shirts and handing them out accordingly the first day of camp. If you feel the size we provided your child is not appropriate, let us know the following day. We will not be able to swap out sizes after day 2. Note: Please make sure your child wears their camp t-shirt everyday they are attending camp.
Q. Will I be able to get extra shirts?
A. We will have additional camp t-shirts available for sale (in CR Upper Level Gallery Space, in IC the Registration Table) for only $5.
Q. What is the camp cancellation policy?
A. A camp cancellation up to 1 week prior to the start of camp will have a $10 administration fee applied. Any cancellations made within 1 week of camp will NOT be refunded. We do ask that any changes to your child’s camp (addition of purchased lunch, before or after care) be added no later than 1 week prior to camp starting.
Q. What does Lab Fees mean?
A. In a move to help make everything a more ‘science’ oriented environment, we refer to all our classes as labs. Lab Fees refers to your class tuition.
Before/After/Lunch Questions
Q. When does Before Care start and After Care end?
A. Before care begins at 8am, children should not be dropped off any earlier. After care ends at 5pm, children need to be picked up promptly at 5pm to avoid late charges.
Q. What will my child are doing in Before Care, After Care, and Lunch Bunch?
A. Before Care, After Care, and Lunch Bunch are a supervised activity time. The children will be playing games, making crafts and more during this time. Lunch Bunch will include a lunch time followed by the supervised activity time.
Q. What is the difference between Lunch Bunch and Purchased Lunch?
A. Lunch Bunch is just the supervised activity time. This does not include a Science Station provided lunch. A sack lunch will need to be brought with your child that does not require refrigeration or heating up. Purchased Lunch is an additional option to the Lunch Bunch time. If you wish for your child to have a lunch provided by the Science Station you may check this option for an additional $25. Note: A Purchased Lunch does NOT take the place of Lunch Bunch, this is an additional option and both boxes would need to be checked.
Camp Questions
Q. How many students are in a class?
A. There are 12 children in the Pre-K – K classes with 1 teacher and 2 STARS volunteers. There will be 20 children in all other classes, with 1 teacher, and 2 STARS volunteers.
Q. What should my child bring or wear?
A. If your child has the Lunch Bunch option, then your child needs to bring a sack lunch that does not require refrigeration or heating up. We will provide any and all other materials needed for the class. All children should wear their camp T-shirt every day, comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes.
Q. Where do I need to bring my child?
A. Every child needs to be dropped off in our drop off location (in Cedar Rapids, between the Science Station Gallery space and Younkers, outside; in Iowa City camp will be held at the Van Allen Building on the University Campus.) If you wish to walk with your child and the group to the classroom space you may park your car and walk with us. You may also pull your car up to the curb and when a teacher is present and begins greeting you, you may drop your child off. DO NOT DROP OFF ANY CHILDREN WITHOUT A SCIENCE STATION STAFF MEMBER PRESENT!
Q. If my child has special needs am I allowed to speak with staff before class?
A. If your child has any special needs (allergies, hearing or vision issues, etc.) please let camp staff know. We appreciate this information and will make any and all necessary adjustments. The camp director will be available for you to speak with and can therefore relay any information to the child’s individual teacher.
Q. Can my child miss a day or two, or be late to class?
A. We strongly recommend against this. Our classes are designed for the full 3 hours, 5 days a week. Your child can miss out on some great information and learning experience if they miss days or are late.
Q. Are you flexible at all with the grade levels?
A. No, we moved to grade levels this year in an order to help keep students and their familiar classmates together and to better fit the class curriculum to the proper school age of the child.
Q. What if my child is older than 6th grade?
A. We have a great camp volunteer program called STARS. STARS are for 7th grade and up, and they will be assigned to an appropriate classroom to assist the teacher and the students with the class. More information can be found about STARS under the Links, Forms, and Resources page, or by calling the Science Station directly, 319-363-4629. |
